Why go abroad?
New perspectives between high school graduation and college
I wanted to travel a bit before starting medical school and at the same time gain insights into a different healthcare system. Travel4med immediately gave me a good feeling thanks to its straightforward organization and authentic communication—and with Sri Lanka, I had sun, beach, and medical impressions all in one.
Organization & Preparation
Completely worry-free thanks to Travel4med
Everything was well structured from the start: quick responses, clear information, helpful videos. The visa application was completed in five minutes. I felt secure and well prepared at all times.
Arrival & Accommodation
Welcome with Welcome Juice & Pool View
A driver was waiting for me at the airport with water and a sign. I received a warm welcome at the villa—with a welcome drink, an orientation, and surroundings that were more reminiscent of a boutique hotel than an internship: a large pool, a green garden, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Everyday life in a hospital in Galle
From heart surgery to pediatric cardiology – learning up close
In the mornings, we were picked up and taken to the clinic, where Geeth looked after us. I was allowed to watch many operations—from premature baby surgery to pacemaker implantation—and often stood right next to the operating table. I was particularly impressed by how close we were to the doctors, who explained a lot to us. Discussions about the healthcare system, shared tea breaks, and even tasks such as drawing heart defects made the whole experience particularly educational.
Leisure, Travel & Experiences
Surfing, Ayurveda, and a short trip to Bangkok
Whether learning to surf, doing yoga, or going on trips to beaches, temples, and viewpoints—I made the most of my free time. The highlights were a multi-day island trip and my 5-day detour to Bangkok. After that, I appreciated Sri Lanka even more—especially because of the honest, open people.
Local community
Small group – big friendships
With only 9 to 12 people in the villa, the atmosphere was informal. Whether playing Werewolf in the evening, spending days at the beach, or attending clinic sessions together, a genuine sense of camaraderie quickly developed. I formed friendships that will surely last beyond the internship.
My conclusion
Medicine, sea, and mindset—it doesn't get any better than this
I am very grateful for this special time. The internship was a perfect mix of medical insights, relaxation, and personal development. My tip: If you can, you should travel outside of the semester breaks—the smaller group size makes everything even more intense and personal.
